Frommer’s Guide to New York City is a nicely formatted, easy to follow guide that has a lot of information that can help out both novice and experienced city goers alike.
Rating: 4 / 5
This book is jam packed with valuable information about New York. If you’re planning a visit, this guide will surely be of great value to you. The included maps to assist in getting where you want to go. I like the dining guides. . . these are helpful in choosing a place to eat as well as making sure the price is in your range. The color pictures are outstanding. What a useful book. My daughter took her daughter on a one-day trip to NYC for her birthday and Frommer’s guide would have been a big help in navigating the short stay. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the book when she visited New York. Highly recommended.

This book is pretty good. No matter what your budget, you’ll find that their candid dining reviews are second to none, with complete details and honest opinions on everything from five-star French restaurants to cutting-edge sushi bars, from classic Jewish delis to Chinatown’s best dim sum.
The authors have already gone everywhere you probably want to go. The authors done the legwork for you, and they’re not afraid to tell it like it is (like a New Yorker do). Though I’m from New York and basically know my way around, I found this book offers a good series candid reviews of so many hotels and restaurants in all price ranges. Every Frommer’s Travel Guide is up-to-date, with exact prices for everything, dozens of color maps, and exciting coverage of sports, shopping, and nightlife.
Completely updated every year (unlike most of the competition), “Frommer’s New York City” does features gorgeous full-color photos of the sights and experiences that await you. As stated on my title, its meticulously researched by a longtime resident, this is the most practical and user-friendly guide you can buy. Its logistical tips and insightful advice will have you navigating the Big Apple. Inside you’ll find all the traditional tourist favorites, plus local finds, neighborhood hangouts, and little-known gems. Can’t ask for anything more from this book except for me to recommend it for you.
Rating: 5 / 5
Of all the travel books available for any given destination, Frommer’s guide typically ends up in the lead as my favorite for their in-depth written descriptions and helpful maps. Pictures, much less color pictures, are not that important to me when selecting a travel guide book, and Frommer’s is typically heavier on information than on pictures. It’s surprising then that the New York City 2010 guide book boldly advertises “Full Color Inside. ” Most likely studies with focus groups informed the publisher that users of travel guides are looking for more full color pictures of the museums, restaurants, hotels, and events that are available in the city or country they’re traveling to. While I can’t say that I agree – it seems to me that a full color picture of an unnamed swimming pool in the hotel section doesn’t really enhance the amount of information I’m receiving, I can understand the decision.
Overall, though, this Frommer’s guide to New York City is thorough and informative without being overly wordy or glossing over information. Most sections of the book are written conversationally, as if the writers are speaking to you directly, rather than from a distant third party (ex. “I also recommend buying tickets in advance. . . “). This gives the information a more dynamic feel, as if a guide is leading you rather than reminding you that you’re just reading a travel guide. It also reminds you that this book is written by people and is not the end-all-be-all New York City guide. I appreciate that.
The book is divided into 10 sections:
1. The Best of the Big Apple (a brief breakdown of the “best” restaurants, hotels, offbeat experiences, etc. – pretty helpful and the only part of the book you need if you just want a few tidbits of information)
2. New York City in Depth (history and current information about New York, interesting for history buffs and thorough travelers, but not necessary reading)
3. Planning Your Trip to New York City (calendar of events, how to get there, health and safety)
4. New York City Neighborhoods & Suggested Itineraries (help finding an address in NYC, 1,2,3 day guides for best itineraries – helpful if you want a prepackaged plan designed by an expert, also just helpful to see what the “best” sights are)
5. Where To Stay (extensive guide to hotels in every neighborhood – standard entry in this type of book, and more than adequate, though let’s face it, these days you’re probably just going to book the best thing you can find online)
6. Where To Dine (extensive guide to restaurants in every neighborhood – again, a standard entry in this type of book, and again more than enough information to go on. There are so many restaurants in NYC that this book couldn’t possibly be complete, but they try their best)
7. Exploring New York City (the longest section of the book – rightfully so – a thorough guide to all the events, attractions, museums, churches, mosques, etc available to tourists in NYC. Complete with very helpful maps, and (in my opinion) unhelpful, but pretty, color pictures)
8. Shopping (Information about shopping. Everything from 5th Avenue to department stores)
9. New York City After Dark (Another fairly large section – devoted to the extensive night life of NYC. Great information about theatre, stand-up, family fare, clubs, bars, etc. by neighborhood. Very useful section)
10. Fast Facts: New York City (Long list of websites to visit for information. Thoughtful addition)
There’s also a sturdy waterproof foldout map that is as important as any other section in the book and a subway map on the inside cover of the final page that is thorough but no doubt confusing to those who are not familiar with the subway lines.
This is a great travel book, especially for such a complex city. I think the pictures take up space that could have been occupied by more information (or maps), but other than that this is a great travel guide and should get you around New York with no trouble. I definitely recommend Frommer’s New York City 2010 for those heading to NYC this year.
Rating: 4 / 5
Frommer’s New York City 2010 contains excellent reviews, vivid color photographs, and insightful ‘insider tips’ on how to have an unforgettable experience in the Big Apple. This is an up-to-date and thorough guide that I would recommend to anyone wishing to visit the City.
